| Do not shudder in disbelief when your children mention the words karate or martial arts. There will be no broken furniture, holes in the walls, or mangled brothers or sisters. Instead, you should be ecstatic! No other activity compares to the benefits your children will receive from the martial arts. Taekwondo is unique in athletics because it is a TOTAL LEARNING ACTIVITY, not just self-defense. Other sports assume that new players already possess the basic physical skills for the game. The ability to throw a ball, run, and other simple hand-eye coordination skills are a given. However, many kids have not been taught these skills and end up as "bench warmers." This will never occur at First Coast Taekwondo. Every child begins by practicing basic skills that are the foundation of Taekwondo. These skills build coordination and balance and let children be active in class instead of just sitting on the bench. These fundamentals allow every child to progress, no matter what abilities he/she first brings to class. This is not the sole benefit of the martial arts. Character building is an essential aspect of Taekwondo. When you visit First Coast Taekwondo, you will notice the dignity and discipline found in class. This discipline in class turns into self-discipline outside of class. Self confidence is another benefit of the martial arts. Every child can participate in Taekwondo and can progress and feel a sense of accomplishment which will have a direct effect on his or her confidence. Courtesy, integrity, and perseverance are also key aspects of Taekwondo training. All of these benefits will often reflect in things done in everyday life, such as school work, manners, and patience. Taekwondo incorporates a variety of self-defense techniques: kicking, blocking, punching, and striking. For this reason, it is often considered the most athletic of the martial arts. Athletic ability will increase the longer a child participates in classes. As it does, coordination increases in the child, as well as his or her ability to defend himself. What starts as legs and arms going all over the place, soon turns into a knowledge of self-defense that lasts a lifetime.
